How The Engineering Company saved over $50,000 in a Florida roundabout project

Throughout the United States, roundabout construction and implementation have continued to grow. Municipalities recognize the importance of these roadways, the way they cut down on accidents, and the number of lives they can save at dangerous intersections.

Roundabout construction is more complex than most people realize. If not built properly, a roundabout can cause just as many headaches and accidents as a traditional four-way intersection.

The Engineering Company recently worked with a large regional community to fix problems with one of their roundabouts.

The problem: insufficient sizing

Roundabout construction must take into consideration many factors. These include traffic flows, adequate exit points, and sizing. The latter can be especially difficult for established communities as their initial layouts were not built with roundabouts in mind.

In the case of our client, sizing was also an issue.

They needed more space for traffic to flow adequately, including a three-way system. The goal was to improve the efficiency of this layout without extension renovations.

The process: evaluation and bidding

TEC team members visited the site in question. There, they performed measurements, took photos, and evaluated the effectiveness of this intersection. A plan was then put together to improve all aspects of this particular roundabout. Early on, it was decided the optimal path forward would be to saw-cut three and a half feet from a concrete apron, expanding its opening from 13.5 feet to 17 feet.

Upon collection of this data, T.E.C. began the bidding process.

Before T.E.C. took over, the client experienced a bid response efficiency of 50%. However, with our closely monitored follow-up and excellent communication, we were able to increase bid efficiency to 75%.

Saving additional expenditures

Several quality bids were received from respectable firms in and around our region. Upon full evaluation of those proposals, TEC settled on the best firm for the job. However, as this was a part of a larger community-wide improvement project, additional cost savings would be required.

TEC worked with the chosen firm to find ways of reducing the final bid. By the time city officials accepted it, T.E.C. was able to save our client over $58,000 from the initial proposal through a reduction of extra MOT charges and mobilization fees.

Informing the community:

One of the more frustrating aspects of road construction is the impact it will have on the community. To minimize this and reduce resident concerns, notices were submitted to area residents apprising them of the upcoming changes. In addition, as construction timelines shifted, those notices were updated with the new expected beginning and completion dates.

Implementing the solution:

One of the hallmarks of our process is support. This helps to ensure that the chosen contractor has all of the necessary tools and information to perform the job successfully. To this end, we employed the services of a construction inspection representative who could help maintain QA/QC standards.

The solution came in within budgetary expectations and with an on-time completion.

The benefit for our customer:

As community adoption rates continue to grow, the benefits of a properly constructed roundabout cannot be understated. In this case, we were able to fix vital issues with an existing intersection, improving traffic patterns and minimizing resident frustration. Along with the cost savings, this helped to make the community-wide improvements a resounding success.
